This class serves those who want more of the mystical element of yoga. Each class begins with yoga to prepare your body and mind for the meditation that follows. For those who have not meditated before in our style, we teach you how. Doing yoga poses before meditation has been part of the authentic yoga tradition for millennia. You get all the healing and care your body needs, along with the transformation for your mind and heart — all the benefits for which Svaroopa® yoga is well known.  The curriculum moves you from beginning to more advanced levels of yoga quickly.

Notes about participating in our online classes

To participate, follow these instructions and suggestions:

  • Zoom is a free easy-to-use app that you can use on your laptop, smart phone, tablet or any other device that has a webcam (video camera). Download and install the Zoom app onto your computer or phone from zoom.us.
  • A device that includes video camera/web cam is a must. We need  to see you to make sure you are doing the poses safely as instructed. You can use your smart phone, but we recommend a tablet, laptop or desktop with video camera capability. With the wider screen, you get a better view.
  • If your phone or computer has poor speakers, you can improve your audio experience by using a Bluetooth speaker. You connect (pair) the Bluetooth speaker with your device, and then you can have the Bluetooth speaker closer to hear more easily. If your phone or computer has a poor microphone, some Bluetooth speakers include a microphone. You will be heard more clearly when you speak. Some of these speakers are relatively inexpensive, as little as around $20.
  • If you are using your device on battery power make sure it is amply charged to last for the duration of the class.
  • For participating in a yoga class, choose a comfortable, quiet location in your home where you will not be disturbed (keep pets out: you can share the yoga with them after class!).
  • Join early to make sure everything is connecting and functional,  and to give us a chance to chat.
  • When you join a class, you will be placed into a “waiting room” until the teacher allows you into the class meeting. Note: Zoom does not allow chocolate in the waiting room, so make sure you bring your own! 😊

Note: If you are having difficulty getting into the class, call +1 (413) 277-8765.

  • At the beginning of class, and just before, you can chat with the instructor and other students. Just sit near your device so your face can be seen. Then, we will go into shavasana (relaxation pose). Set up so that when you lie down, the top of your head is toward your camera (your head will then be toward the teacher, just as in our studio classes). Your body should be visible to the teacher from head to toes. One way to see for sure what your teacher will see when you are lying on the floor: place a yoga block or something similar to mark where your head will be and another block where your feet will be, then take a look at what your camera is seeing. Make sure your whole body is visible, from head to toe (in that order). When we change positions during class, such as to sit or stand, you may need to adjust the camera/screen angle to keep you fully in view, or you may need to move further from the camera. Especially when standing, you might have to stand further away so that your whole body is visible. So make sure there’s room behind you (when you are facing the camera).
  • Make sure your space is well lit so the teacher can see you easily. Suggestion: have a light or two above your laptop facing you, and if needed, a light to each side.
  • So the teacher can see you and your alignment in poses clearly
    • Wear clothing that contrasts with your background (the wall behind you and whatever you are lying on).
    • Do not wear black or dark blue clothing.
  • Have the following nearby, ready for use: a folding chair or kitchen chair, yoga blocks, blankets or pillows. If you don’t have blocks, perhaps tie together two groups of books. We still have blocks and blankets for sale at the studio. You can contact us to arrange for pickup. You can also order from online retailers.
